Kai Kaarniranta


Professor of ophthalmology and chief physician at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and Kuopio University Hospital. Recently, he was nominated to become a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and 2020 he was appointed editor-in-chief of Acta Ophthalmologica. He served as President of the European Association for Vision and Eye Research (EVER) 2019-2020.

Major Awards and Prizes: Martti Hämäläinen Young Scientists 2003; Kuopio University Scientist Award 2006; Second Poster Prize Nordic Ophthalmology Kongress 2006, Copenhagen; European Society of Ophthalmology lecture 2007; Elsemay Björn Young Scientist Award 2009; Best section paper EVER 2012, Nice; Acta Ophthalmologica Silver Medal 2014; Honour External Scientist, University of Lodz 2017-2019, Acta Ophthalmologica Silver Medal 2018, European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS) prize for the highest article citation.

More than 20 clinical trials from phase I to Phase III as PI or sub-investigator for AMD, glaucoma and dry eye syndrome. Annual research grants ca. 500 000 euros.
